Despite having only just landed on the global streaming platform four weeks ago, the series has already smashed records after more than 76 million households tuned in within the first month – that’s Netflix’s greatest triumph yet for a first-season original television series.
So what do you need to know about The Witcher?
What is The Witcher about?
Based on the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and the subsequent video game adaptation, The Witcher follows the tale of solo monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia, played by Henry Cavill.
The mysterious character belongs to a rare breed of beasts, known as Witchers, who use their supernatural powers to compete against humans, elves and gnomes.
In the eight-part series, Geralt of Rivia navigates medieval world ‘the Continent’ and his life soon becomes intertwined with sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) and runaway Princess Ciri (Freya Allan).
But not all is as it seems with the line between good and evil dangerously blurred.
According to the Netflix synopsis, Geralt of Rivia’s journey towards destiny is no easy feat, as “people often prove more wicked than beasts”.

How can I watch The Witcher?

Will there be a season two?
Off the back of its success, Netflix announced that a second season is in the works and is set to drop in 2020.
All three central characters, Henry Cavill, Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra, will reprise their roles.
Cavill teased the news via Instragram video in December, as he told fans: “Pre-production will be starting very shortly on The Witcher season two”.
Further demonstrating its appeal (thus encouraging us to tune in), the platform has also given the green light for an anime feature film titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
