The ‘Bird Box’ monsters were left up to the viewers interpretation which is no doubt why some were seriously surprised when the images were released.

One commenter wrote: “In my opinion [the monster designs] wouldn’t have added to the film. Glad it was cut.”

Another added: “I feel like I’m missing something here. How is seeing this supposed to make masses of people want to commit suicide? I don’t understand the meaning behind making the monster look this way.”

Designer Andy Bergholtz, who created the creatures, pointed out on Instagram that the final form is still open to interpretation, and depends on the fears of the film’s main characters—namely Sandra Bullock’s character, Mallory.

Bergholtz wrote: “Considering [Mallory’s] pregnant state throughout the movie, the producers felt [her] nightmare would have something to do with a twisted, demonic baby creature attacking her.”

The reveal comes after ‘Bird Box’ director Susanne Bier said the monsters didn’t work with the film’s final cut, despite filming scenes with them.

Bier said to BloodyDisgusting.com: “Whatever those beings are, they tap into your deepest fear. Everybody’s deepest fear is going to be different from the other person. I think to suddenly take on a concrete shape in order to illustrate that becomes weak.”

“It would have been the wrong decision.”
