The British man who tried to save backpacker Mia Ayliffe-Chung during a vicious attack at Shelly’s Backpackers Hostel in Home Hill, Queensland, has died.
Thomas Jackson was severely injured after he intervened against Frenchman Smail Ayad who attacked 21-year-old Ayliffe-Chung after he reportedly became infatuated with her.
Jackson was hospitalised with multiple stab wounds to his head and leg but the ABC now reports that the 30-year-old’s life support has been turned off.
Police have confirmed they will upgrade Ayad‘s charges at his next court appearance scheduled for October 28.

Jackson’s father flew in to Townsville over the weekend to be by his son’s side, and praised his bravery.
“There are many and varied reasons why we are, and always will be, immensely proud of Tom,” Les Jackson said. “His actions in response to this horrific attack only add to that sense of pride.”
