If you can’t stop watching Netflix’s new geopolitical drama The Diplomat then you’re not alone. Since its release, the show has garnered a huge number of fans who can’t get enough of the professional and personal dramas of the characters.
The story follows Kate Wyler, a new United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, as she battles international crises and tries to survive her marriage to career diplomat Hal Wyler.

Keri Russel plays The Diplomat’s beloved protagonist Kate Wyler. Russell has been acting since the early 90s and you might recognise her for her roles in Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, Mission: Impossible III, Dawn Of The Planet Apes, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Americans and Cocaine Bear.
Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler
Rufus Sewell plays the charismatic Hal Wyler, Kate’s husband and fellow diplomat. If Sewell seems familiar then that might be because he played Kate Winslet’s heartbreaker boss in The Holiday. He’s also known for his roles in The Father, Old, Judy, A Knights Tale, Hercules, The Man in the High Castle and The Illusionist.
David Gyasi as Austin Dennison
David Gyasi plays Austin Dennison, a UK Foreign Secretary and Kate’s closest ally in the UK. You might have seen Gyasi in Doctor Who, Carnival Row, The Sandman, Cloud Atlas, Interstellar and The Dark Knight Rises.
Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge
Rory Kinnear plays The Diplomat’s conservative British Prime Minister, Nicol Trowbridge. You might recognise Kinnear for his role as Bill Tanner in the James Bond series, as well as his roles in The Imitation Game, Black Mirror, Bank Of Dave and Inside No.9.
Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford
Ato Essandoh plays Stuart Hayford, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in London and Kate’s right hand man. Before starring in The Diplomat, Essandoh had roles in Chicago Med, Jason Bourne, Blood Diamond, Hitch, Elementary and X-Men:Dark Phoenix.
Ali Ahn as Eidra Park
Ali Ahn plays the formidable Eidra Park, the chief of the CIA in London. Ahn is best known for her roles in Raising Dion, Next, Orange is the New Black, Billions, The Path and Supernatural.
Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah
Nana Mensah plays The Diplomat’s Billie Appiah, the White House chief of staff. Before the show, Mensah starred in The Chair, Bonding, 13 Reasons Why, New Amsterdam, The King Of Staten Island, Queen of Glory, Orange is the New Black and An African City.
Miguel Sandoval as Miguel Ganon
Miguel Sandoval plays Miguel Ganon, the US secretary of state and Kate’s boss. The character doesn’t only disapprove of how Kate goes about her work but also her choice of husband. You might have seen Sandoval before in Jurassic Park, Medium, Station 19, Do The Right Thing, Sharp Objects and Bad Judge.
Michael McKean as President Rayburn
Michael McKean stars as The Diplomat’s President Rayburn, an ageing but competent leader who’s trying to restore America’s position on the political world stage. McKean is also know for his roles in Better Call Saul, Laverne & Shirley, Grace and Frankie, 101 Dalmatians, Jungle Cubs, Clue, Rugrats and Saturday Night Live.
Celia Imrie as Meg Roylin
British actress Celia Imrie plays Meg Roylin, a Conservative Party operative. You might recognise Imrie for her roles in Mamma Mia: Here We Again!, Absolutely Fabulous, Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, St Trinians, Calendar Girls and Nanny McPhee.
T’nia Miller as Cecilia Dennison
T’nia Miller plays Cecilia Dennison, Austin’s sister who stays out of politics. Miller has also starred in Sex Education, Free Rein, Years and Years, Witless, Guilt, Marcella, The Feed, Banana and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
