A New Podcast Series Has Arrived For ‘The Crown’ Devotees

The Crown: The Official Podcast launched on November 18 to coincide with the launch of the show’s third installment and is sure to be reign as your go-to commute material.

Hosted by Scottish television presenter Edith Bowman, the podcast takes a deep dive into every episode of season three – examining how well the Windsor family’s real life experiences have translated onto the small screen.

Giving listeners a behind-the-scenes look into the cult drama series, there are a number of guest speakers per episode with insight from show creator Peter Morgan, leading members of the cast and cast directors, Robert Sterne and Nina Gold.

The first episode titled ‘Olding’ delves into the challenges that came with changing the world-famous cast, as Olivia Colman took the reigns from predecessor Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II.

Interestingly, the podcast reveals that there was no other actress in the running to play the majestic role.

“She happened to be a list of one, we hadn’t considered anyone else,” show creator Peter Morgan explains. “I think first and foremost the Queen happens to be both the grandest woman in the country and yet entirely approachable it seems. Olivia has something of that.”

“She feels like someone who is very likeable,” he continues.

“The hardest thing about playing the Queen I think is to walk that very thin line between playing someone who is clearly very shy and private and yet someone [where you would] expect there are many Russian dolls within them that have been locked away and hidden away. And I felt pretty certain that Olivia could really bring something to that.”

The second episode features guests including lead director Ben Carron and Head of Research Annie Sulzberger while the third installment examining The Crown‘s retelling of the 1966 Aberfan disaster.

Hoorah, finally something to keep us occupied while impatiently awaiting season four.
