‘The Color Purple’ Trailer Gives Us Our First Glimpse At The Movie Musical Adaptation

A new generation of women is getting their own version of The Color Purple.

Since it’s release in 1982, Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel—which is about an African-American girl growing up in Georgia in the early 1900s—has deeply resonated with Black women across America. 

In 1985, the novel was famously adapted into a film of the same name by Steven Spielberg, with Whoopie Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey in starring roles. 

Then in 2005, The Color Purple got the on-stage treatment when it was turned into a Broadway production. The highly successful musical was nominated for eleven Tony awards in 2006, and won two Tony awards again, in 2016.

Now, there’s an entirely new The Color Purple is coming to our screens. The new film, based on the Tony award-winning musical version of the story, is coming to theatres this December.

Who is Starring In ‘The Color Purple’ Movie Musical? 

Fantasia Barrino-Taylor will reprise the role of Celie, which she also played in the Broadway show. Likewise, Danielle Brooks will return to the character she played on Broadway—Sophia. 

Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid) plays the young Nettie Harris, while Colman Domingo (Euphoria) takes on the role of Albert “Mister” Johnson. The film also stars Corey Hawkins (In The Heights) as Mister’s son Harpo, Louis Gossett Jr (Roots) as Mister’s father, Ol’ Mister Johnson and R&B singer H.E.R as Mary “Squeak” Agnes.

Oprah Winfrey, who received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in the 1985 film, will return to the new movie as a producer. Oprah also worked as a producer on the stage musical alongside Quincy Jones, Harvey Weinstein and Scott Sanders. Sanders will also be producing the new film.

How Will This Film Be Different From The 1985 Version Of ‘The Color Purple’? 

Firstly, the new movie will be based on the stage production of the novel. This means we will be getting a musical version of the story.

Oprah also that revealed the new film involves a number of key differences, telling the crowd at CinemaCon, “This ain’t your mama’s Color Purple.”

So far, we know that the film will employ magic realism to “see and feel what’s going on in Celie’s imagination.” 

When Will The Color Purple Be Released? 

The Color Purple will be released on 25th December 2023.
