If you have children – or you’re a favourite aunty or babysitter – then you’ll be (all too) familiar with the “That’s not my…” children’s book series.

For the uninitiated, each books focuses on animals, and identifying the reader’s own animal. For example, “That’s not my fox, its ears are too furry” “That’s not my monkey, its tail is too soft”. You get the picture.

In the past week, a parody of the popular book series has gone viral – and it’s easy to see why. Entitled “That’s not my husband…”, the book series takes aim at underachieving husbands… “That’s not my husband… he’s changing a nappy” reads one page. “That’s not my husband… he’s home for bathtime” says another.

The books were created by Australian author Kasey Edwards in 2011 – but this week they went viral after an American man wrote a critical post about them on Father’s Day in the US.

Why?

Edwards says:“[He wrote] something about how we should be building our men up instead of dragging them down and outright refuted my insinuation that men don’t do an equal share of childcare (despite all the evidence showing the opposite). Women saw it and instead of agreeing with him, they related with the book and found it funny.”

As a result, Edwards has been interviewed by a range of media outlets in the US and Australia in the past few days.

Edwards says she stands by the premise of the parody book. “I think the success of OMG! That’s Not My Husband is due to the fact that it’s calling a spade a spade. It’s showing that in many cases fathers in 2016 are 1950s husbands masquerading as egalitarian.”

And if you happen to know such a man, here’s where you can buy one.
