It’s been two years since the #MeToo movement first shook up the world, but now, civil rights activist and the original founder of the powerful hashtag, Tarana Burke, is demanding more.
“If you are ready to change the world, if you are ready to join this movement, if you are ready to do the work that’s necessary to end sexual violence, I can only leave you with these two words: Me too,” she famously said when she launched the original #MeToo campaign.
Now, she’s introduced a spin-off hashtag, #MeTooVoter, and it’s already taking over the Internet.
This time, the objective is to mobilise voters ahead of the 2020 US elections and push for sexual violence and harassment to be part of the discussions among candidates.
“#MeTooVoter means you pledge to lift up the #MeToo framework and demand policy, legal, and cultural change. It is the first step of a new era in our movement.” Burke explained in a tweet on the Me Too account.
“October marks the 2nd anniversary of the #MeToo hashtag & the start of a monumental shift. It rose awareness, but we demand more. I wrote this op-ed for @TIME in light of the upcoming #DemDebate. We are voting for accountability in 2020. #MeTooVoter,” Burke Tweeted last week as she introduced the new hashtag to the world.
While her message is yet to be heard by any of the US presidential candidate parties, she’s a woman on a mission. Following the fourth Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday, Burke took to Twitter again:
“Disappointed that #MeTooVoter was not apart of this #DemDebate but we are going to keep pushing this issue! Sign our petition demanding that the issue be elevated in the November debate! #askaboutmetoo,” she said.
“We’re not done. Pass it on!”
