Steven Spielberg Responds To Natalie Portman’s Golden Globes Burn

Portman took a powerful swipe at the awards for snubbing female directors

From Nicole Kidman’s acceptance speech that called out sexual misconduct, to Oprah Winfrey’s passionate call to arms, the Golden Globes had no shortage of inspirational women making their voices heard.

Natalie Portman joined that very long list when she took the opportunity to call out the disappointing lack of women nominated for Best Director.

While presenting the award alongside Ron Howard, Portman did not miss a beat and declared “And here are the all male nominees”.

Now, director Steven Spielberg—who was nominated in the category for The Post—has responded to Portman’s powerful point.

“There’s also a watershed happening right now, slowly, maybe not fast enough, for women directors,” he told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday.

“I mean you have Patty Jenkins. We have some amazing women that have come forward, you know Mudbound and Lady Bird. This is a pretty incredible year, and I think you’ll be seeing some nominations. I’m predicting at the Oscars this year for a woman director, if not several.”

The list of this year’s Academy Award nominees will be announced on January 23—and we really hope there won’t be a Golden Globes repeat.
