While Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have always appeared to have a fairytale Hollywood relationship, it seems the storybook romance is over.
The pair, who have been married since 2019 and share two children together – an eldest daughter Willa and second daughter, whose name has allegedly been revealed through legal documents – have always seemed completely smitten with each other.
However, it’s obvious that things are not as sweet as they once seemed.
September 3: Rumours Fly That Joe Jonas Has Retained A Divorce Lawyer
However, on September 3 TMZ released a bombshell report suggesting that Joe had contacted divorce lawyers and was on the cusp of filing divorce papers to dissolve his marriage. The report said Jonas had been seen without his wedding ring on various occasions, but with it on at others.
In August, TMZ reported that the couple had sold their Miami house for $15 million. They had only purchased the property the year before but had renovated it in the meantime, hence their profit.
September 6: Joe Jonas Files For Divorce From Sophie Turner
Jonas officially filed for divorce on September 6, 2023. TMZ sighted court documents filed in Miami on Tuesday, while the US Today show reports they state the marriage is “irretrievably broken”.
This was followed by a joint statement posted to both Joe and Sophie’s Instagram pages that read, “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
TMZ reports that Jonas hired celebrity lawyer Tom Sasser, who handled Tiger Woods’ divorce, to look after the dissolution of the marriage.
The news came as a shock to fans as the couple have appeared to be more in love than ever in recent months. In August, 2023, Turner posted a photo of herself twinning in matching pyjamas with her husband to celebrate his birthday, writing, “Happy birthday handsome” over the shot.
When Joe accepted a joint star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame honouring his band The Jonas Brothers, he said, “Sophie, what up homie. You’re my partner in crime. You keep me motivated and inspired every day. I strive to be as cool as you.”
Adding, “You got any plans after this?”
He also addressed his two daughters, “To my little ones at home, Daddy loves you to the moon and back.”
Despite being married with two children, the couple are young, with Jonas aged just 34 and Turner, 27. Joe’s filing has asked for a ‘parenting plan’ to be created and he’s opting for shared custody.
September 20: Sophie Turner And Taylor Swift Step Out For Dinner In NYC
After the news of the split was settling in, Sophie Turner stepped out in New York City with Joe Jonas’ ex, Taylor Swift. The pair were pictured looking gorgeous head-to-toe, arm-in-arm as they strolled the streets after dinner.
Swift had become close to the pair despite her earlier animosity towards Jonas for breaking up with her in a 27 second phone call back in 2008. She even wrote a song, ‘Invisible String’, where she sings, “Cold was the steel of my axe to grind for the boys who broke my heart. Now I send their babies presents.”
However, Swift appears to be supporting Turner through the breakup, with the pair seen deep in conversation while at dinner at Via Carota in the West Village.
September 21: Sophie Turner Sues Joe Jonas To Return Kids To The UK, Says She Learnt Of The Divorce Through The Media
Sophie Turner has made her own statement after her husband filed for divorce. According to documents sighted by Page Six, she filed a lawsuit for the “immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained.”
The document claims that the couple agreed to make the UK their “forever home” at Christmas 2022. While news that the couple sold their Miami home wasn’t public until August 2023, Page Six claims the couple relocated to the UK in April, where Turner was due to start filming miniseries ‘Joan’. In the same document, it says the couple had moved to purchase a property in Henley-on-Thames, England, which was due for completion this coming December.
Per the document, as Turner was working, it was decided that Jonas would take the children to America for his Jonas Brother Tour in August, as he’d have more free time during the day. Turner was due to meet up with them in September.
However, the marriage broke down in an alleged argument on August 15, Jonas’ birthday. Jonas then filed for divorce while his children were in America, which Page Six reports, Turner allegedly found out “through the media”.
They allegedly met up on September 17 in New York to discuss the separation, where Turner “reiterated” their plans for the children to grow up in England.
The same document claims, “The Father has possession of the children’s passports,” the documents claim. “He refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother.”
In the document, the ‘wrongful retention’ began on September 20, 2023.
September 21: Joe Jonas Fires Back At Turner’s Lawsuit
Jonas’ rep told Page Six that Turner’s lawsuit was a “harsh legal position” that goes against their “amicable co-parenting setup”, which Jonas believed they were working towards when they met on Sunday September 17.
“Less than 24 hours later, Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK. Thereafter, she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could take them out of the country immediately,” the rep told Page Six.
“Joe is seeking shared parenting with the kids so that they are raised by both their mother and father, and is of course also okay with the kids being raised both in the US and the UK.”
The representative also denied that Turner found out about the divorce “through the media”, claiming she was “aware” he was going to file.
“This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending,” his rep said. “When language like ‘abduction’ is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst.”
“The children were not abducted,” it continued.
The statement also addressed the various ‘sources’ that alluded to Turner being a ‘party girl’ when the divorce was announced.
“Joe has already disavowed any and all statements purportedly made on his behalf that were disparaging of Sophie,” the statement read.
“They were made without his approval and are not consistent with his views.”
September 27: Sophie And Joe’s Second Child’s Name Revealed, And Their Lawyers Attend Court In Miami
In the documents obtained by Page Six, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s children’s names were used as acronyms. Their eldest daughter was referred to as ‘WRJ’ and we know she is called ‘Willa Jonas’ already.
The youngest daughter’s name however, was not yet revealed, but referred to in the documents as ‘DMJ’. Page Six reports that the ‘D’ actually refers to the baby’s first name, which is allegedly…. Delphine!
While there are various sources that suggest what the name means – with everything from ‘dophin’ to ‘womb’ – there’s no denying that it’s a very chic name. As to whether the estranged couple intend to stick with the full name or nickname her (Delly, Delphie, Phillie??) remains to be seen. Fans are naturally already approving of the choice.
“Stop it delphine jonas?? i’m crying that’s so pretty,” one fan posted to Twitter.
The same day, TMZ reported that both Sophie and Joe’s lawyers appeared in a Miami courtroom, each asking the judge to try the case in their own country (America for Joe, and the UK for Sophie). They say the decision has been left with a federal judge.
September 28: Taylor Swift Allegedly Loans Sophie Turner And Children NYC Apartment
According to multiple reports, Taylor Swift has loaned Sophie Turner and her two children an apartment in New York as her marriage to Joe Jonas continues to unravel.
Per Page Six, the singer owns an investment property in Tribeca, which she has loaned to the family as a temporary home.
The outlet also obtained photos of Sophie and her daughters leaving the property earlier this week, with a suitcase and travel cot also loaded into their waiting car.
Prior to moving into Swift’s property, the actress was thought to be residing at a hotel in Midtown New York. We suppose it pays to count one of the biggest popstars in the world as a friend?
September 29: Reports Of Private Letter From Joe Jonas Arise
The dispute between Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas continues. While the pair appear to be staying in New York for the meantime, Turner’s lawsuit aims to prove that they had chosen the UK as their place of residence.
Now, Page Six reports that Turner submitted a letter to the courts that Jonas allegedly penned when trying to secure their new home (which is currently in escrow and was due for completion in December) in Oxford, UK.
“When my wife and I decided we were going to spend more time in the UK and search for a permanent home, our daughter expressed three unwavering requirements: having chickens, a pony and a Wendy house,” Page Six reports that Jonas, 34, wrote to the seller.
“While many of the houses we viewed met this criteria, the moment we turned the corner and caught sight of the charming blue shutters adorning [redacted], we experienced a sense of magic unlike anything we had felt before.”
“My father-in-law is an incredibly keen gardener, and he was suitably impressed by your vegetable garden too, a very important sign off!”
The alleged letter goes on to say that Jonas had envisioned himself living life in the Thames riverside location.
“I have been completely charmed by the idea of dropping my children to school on the boat and being able to spend a leisurely afternoon cruising to the pub with friends on my very own boat,” the report continues.
September 30: Turner Spotted At Dinner With Taylor Swift, Blake Lively and Brittany Mahomes
Sophie Turner was spotted yet again with new bestie Taylor Swift, as well as her long-time friend Blake Lively. The group were also joined by Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chief’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is teammates with Swift’s rumoured boyfriend Travis Kelce.
The friends donned autumnal colours, with Sophie in an oxblood long-sleeve minidress to attend dinner at Italian restaurant Emilio’s Ballato in SoHo, Manhattan.
Oh to be a fly on the wall of that conversation!
October 11: Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner Reach Temporary Custody Agreement
Just over a month after filing for divorce, it seems Jonas and Turner have reached a temporary custody agreement.
The former couple released a joint statement regarding parenting arangements for their daugheters Willa, 3, and Delphine, 15 months.
“After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK. We look forward to being great co-parents,” they said.
According to People, the details of the arrangement stipulate that Jonas and Turner will have both children for two weeks at a time. The travel permissions allow either parent to travel anywhere in the US and England during their allocated custody, meaning Turner can return to her home in England, and Jonas can bring both girls on his tour.
