Sharon Tate’s Wedding Dress Sells At Auction

Anonymous bidder pays $77K for slain star's gown

It’s a fairly ghoulish relic to own, but the ivory silk mini wedding dress worn by murdered starlet Sharon Tate in her 1968 nuptials to director Roman Polanksi has managed to fetch $76, 926 at auction.

An anonymous bidder snapped up the historical garment, which Tate, who shot to fame in the 1967 cult classic Valley of the Dolls, wore when she married Polanksi at the Chelsea Registry. Guests Michael Caine, Joan Collins and Candice Bergen were all in attendance for the celebrations, held afterwards at The Playboy Club.

But the joy also worn on Tate’s face would turn to tragedy just 18 months later, when she was tragically murdered by Charles Manson on August 9, 1969. Tate was 26 years old and eight months pregnant with her first child when she was slaughtered along with six other people in a two day murder spree at the Beverley Hills mansion she and Polaksi were renting.

With the 50th anniversary of Tate’s death looming, there has been an increased interest in her life and tragic death, including an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, starring Australian actress Margot Robbie as Tate.

Since that horrific event, Tate’s sister Debra has taken care of her sister’s items, storing her special belongings in her home in Los Angeles. “I have been working in this auction for eight months,” she told People magazine. “I think it’s time to share her with other people.”
