Actors put themselves through a lot in the name of art—including baring it all.
When it comes to performing sex scenes, a lot of actors have—unfortunately—learnt the hard way.
Whether it’s due to pressure, a lack of boundaries or naivety about what’s expected, it’s not unusual for actors to have regrets.
By opening up about their nude scene regrets, these famous actors are empowering younger and less experienced actors to not be afraid of doing things a little differently.
Kate Winslet
It’s hard to name a scene more iconic than Kate Winslet’s, “draw me like one of your french girls” scene in Titanic but for the actress, it wasn’t so amazing. Winslet has told Yahoo News, that the only reason she revealed so much was because she was feeling insecure.
“I wish I hadn’t shown so much flesh but I was young and I knew I had things to prove,” Winslet shared with the outlet.
Mary-Louise Parker
Weeds star, Mary-Louise Parker told More magazine that she regrets appearing fully nude in just one of the series’ many risqué scenes. While Parker felt comfortable with the sex scenes she had to film, she didn’t like getting fully naked for a bath scene.
“I didn’t think I needed to be naked, and I fought with the director about it, and now I’m bitter. I knew it was going to be on the Internet: ‘Mary-Louise shows off her big nipples.’ I wish I hadn’t done that. I was goaded into it,” Parker told the outlet.
Helen Mirren
Helen Mirren has never felt comfortable doing nude scenes, describing the experience as “mortifying” to Venice Magazine.
“I’ve always had a problem doing nudity. I hated it! I hated the fact that I hated it, however. It’s never a comfortable thing…I’ve never enjoyed it, ever. It’s always mortifying. But I always felt it was something I should get over, as well. I might seem uninhibited, but believe me I’m not! I’ve just never thought it was necessary, ever,” Mirren told the publication.
Emily Blunt
Emily Blunt famously stripped down for My Summer of Love but the actress has revealed that she wouldn’t do it again.
“Too racy would be one thing I wouldn’t do for now. I’m not so keen on doing nudity, because I’m not 22 anymore. And, actually, it’s not so much a moral thing as, ‘I’ve done it before, and do I really want to do it again?’ Does it serve the film or is it gratuitous and seeing someone’s t-ts for the sake of it? Because I don’t think it’s necessary most of the time,” Blunt told The Telegraph.
Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman has mixed feelings about her nude scene in Wes Anderson’s Hotel Chevalier. While the star originally said “she didn’t listen to her intuition” and would “trust her gut more” in the future, she later told MTV News that she doesn’t “really have regrets”, but “It’s more that I don’t like misappropriation of stuff, like when you create something as part of a story and then a piece of it ends up on a porn site. It’s meant to be a dramatic scene and part of a story. That really makes me angry.”
Sharon Stone
Sharon Stone didn’t know her infamous Basic Instinct leg-crossing scene was going to be that infamous until she saw it on the big screen.
“When we did it, it was going to be an innuendo and the director said, ‘We’re seeing the white of your underwear, I need you to take them off.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t want you to see anything’ and he’s like, ‘No, no you’re not going to’,” Stone recalled. “When I saw it in the theatre, with a bunch of other people, I was like (in shock). When the film ended I went in the booth and I slapped him (Verhoeven) and I said, ‘You could have showed me this to me by myself’.”
Dakota Johnson
As the star of erotic drama 50 Shades Of Grey, Dakota Johnson isn’t someone you might expect to have trouble with steamier scenes. However, the star revealed to Time magazine that one of the scenes, where she was tied up and pretending to be struck by a whip, was not so enjoyable.
“It wasn’t “a sensual or pleasurable environment,” Johnson said. “It was really hot–not in a steamy, sexual way. It’s just sweaty and not very comfortable.”
