Matt Damon has opened about about his experience filming We Bought A Zoo with Scarlett Johansson—including that kissing scene.
In a new interview with LADbible, the actor jokingly recalled their 2011 on-screen kiss.
“I had to kiss Scarlett Johansson—can you imagine how horrible that was for me? It was hell!” Damon said, before providing a little more context on the experience.
“What happened was, we did a shot before lunch and it was this nice little two-shot that ended in the kiss. And it was really good,” he continued. “She and I both thought it was over. She ate, like, an onion sandwich.”
Unfortunately, the kissing scene wasn’t over and the co-stars had to lock lips after they returned from their break.
“She came in, and [director] Cameron Crowe had set the camera up, and it was like a tight shot of the kiss. She goes, ‘Ah s**t! I literally just had an onion sandwich!’”
Damon revealed that while he was “making fun of her” about her “onion breath”, the experience wasn’t terrible.
“Her breath smells like roses,” Damon added.
It’s not the first time Damon has spoken about his on-screen kisses, with the actor revealing himself and Ben Affleck were originally meant to kiss in their film, The Last Duel.
“In the original actual version of that scene — the way that ceremony actually took place was that you kissed everybody on the mouth,” Affleck told Entertainment Tonight. “And we had that in the script.”
“That would’ve been our first on-screen kiss,” Damon added.
The actor has also previously spoken about his on-screen make-out scene with Michael Douglas in Behind the Candelabra.
“Michael was a wonderful kisser,” Damon told Playboy. “It’s not like I kiss him just once. We drew it up like a football plan.”
Off-screen, Damon and Luciana Barroso have been married since 2005, and share four daughters.
