“It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS,” his family told People in a statement on Monday.

“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honour his request.”

Randall’s family took the time to thank the doctors and medical staff who worked diligently to support them through Bryan’s illness.

“We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours,” his family added.

“At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.”

The statement was signed, “His Loving Family.”

Just over three weeks after the announcement of Randall’s passing, a source told People that Bullock, 59, is extremely ‘grateful’ for all the support her family has received in this difficult time.

They said that Bullock has seen the, “incredible outpouring of support toward ALS research since Bryan’s passing.”

“It was very important to her that when she and his family made the initial statement of Bryan’s passing, those who were on this journey with her and Bryan, from the beginning, were recognized — with the Healey Center at Mass General leading the way,” says the source.

“She is so grateful to all those who have donated and is happy that out of something so heartbreaking came something so positive for others.”

Bullock had been with Randall, a model turned photographer, since 2015, after meeting him when he photographed her son’s birthday party in January of that year.  She was previously married to Jesse James for five years, and has two children Louis, 13 and Laila, 10.

The pair were intensely private, but they did attend Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux’s wedding in August 2015 and made their first red carpet appearance in October the same year for the premiere of Bullock’s movie Our Brand Is Crisis.

Bullock told Red Table Talk in December 2021, “I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children— three children, [Randall’s] older daughter. It’s the best thing ever.”

Bullock has two children — Louis, 13, and Laila, 10 — from her previous marriage to Jesse James. Randall has a daughter, Skylar Staten Randall, 29, from a previous marriage.

On the topic of tying the knot, Bullock made it clear that she didn’t feel the need to do the big white wedding again.

“I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother,” she said. “I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man.”

In the same interview, she said she was proud of the “example” Randall set for her young children.

“I have a partner who’s very Christian and there are two different ways of looking at things. I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him,” she said.

“I’m stubborn but sometimes I need to sit back and listen and go, ‘You’re saying it differently, but we mean exactly the same thing’,” she said during the appearance.

In March 2022, Bullock announced that she would be taking a break from acting to focus on her family life. At the time the inference was that she would be looking after the children, but the news of Randall’s passing makes her decision much clearer.

She said she wanted to spend her time “in the place that makes [her] happiest”, in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“I take my job very seriously when I’m at work. … And I just want to be 24/7 with my babies and my family. That’s where I’m gonna be for a while.”

Bullock’s last project was her leading role in The Lost City (2022) alongside Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe. She also had a cameo in Bullet Train later the same year.

Instead of sending flowers or gifts, Randall’s family has asked for donations to the ALS Association and the Massachusetts General Hospital.

A spokesperson for the ALS Association told People that they saw an additional $50,000 raised from donors to honour Bryan, and an increase of over 100,000 visitors to their website.

Randall’s illness, ALS, is an acronym for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It’s a rare neurological disease that impacts motor neurons, which control the body’s movement. The degenerative illness weakens muscles over time, and there is currently no cure.

You may remember the viral ‘ice bucket challenge’ which went viral in 2014. Members of the public and celebrities would pour a bucket of water over themselves and tag other people to do the same, raising money for ALS through donations to take part in the challenge.

It is said to have raised $220 million worldwide.
