Australian actress Ruby Rose has had an extremely emotional response to landing the coveted role of DC superhero Batwoman.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, the 32-year-old opened up about being cast as the first openly gay superhero.
“It’s a game-changer,” said Rose, who is openly gay and identifies as gender fluid. “Growing up watching TV, I never saw someone on TV that I could identify with. Let alone a superhero!”
Rose found out she landed the gig an hour before the premiere of her new film The Meg, and she couldn’t help bursting in to tears at the news.
“I was so nervous doing the red carpet that I basically skipped everybody because I kept spontaneously crying… and I feel like I’m probably gonna do it now,” she said. “I’m so thrilled.”
Fallon was also equally excited/emotional at the news, admitting to Rose, “I almost got emotional backstage because I was talking to you and saying kids are going to be dressing up like you for Halloween. You said that you’ve been going to hospitals and visiting children and now you can visit them dressed as Batwoman.”
Rose said she lives by the motto “Be the person you needed when you were younger” – and she’s doing just that.
Ruby Rose: not the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed.
The Batwoman series is set to hit our TV screens during the 2019-2020 TV season.
