‘I’ve Always Had Two Jobs’: How Rain Spencer Went From Waitress To TV Star

The 23-year-old 'Summer I Turned Pretty' star gets candid about her rise to fame.

The old trope goes: “If you want to get something done, ask a busy person.” Perhaps that’s why Hollywood seems to have actor Rain Spencer on speed dial of late.

After dropping out of college, the 23-year-old American has been busy hustling her way to the top, landing a lead role in the film Good Girl Jane last year, which won her Best Performance in a U.S. Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“I’ve always had two jobs, trying to pay rent and live in LA. Whether that be as a busboy or selling jewellery to get by,” says Spencer from her home in California.

“I grew up with a single mum, so I’m forever grateful that she drove me around to auditions and stuck with me. She always said, ‘If you are gonna do this, you have to do it 100 per cent – you can’t pick and choose when you’re going to show up.’”

Fortunately, Spencer took her mother’s advice and secured the role of Taylor in the cult hit The Summer I Turned Pretty (TSITP) – based on Jenny Han’s trilogy of young-adult romance novels of the same name.

A chameleon on and off-screen, Spencer has been busy spending her down time (following the season return of TSITP) establishing her style. “It’s fun to embody different characters through fashion,” she says. “Sometimes I want to look like a starving artist and then other times I want to look like ‘that bitch’ and feel like a Beverly Hills mom. I own a miniskirt for the first time in my life.”

As for where you can expect to find the rising star next? “I’d love to be in Schitt’s Creek and also play a character that is completely insane.”

The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming now on Amazon Prime.
