Queensland Mother-Of-Three, Karen Gilliland, Murdered In Front Of Her Children

Police label the scene one of the "worst they've seen"

A Queensland mother-of-three, who was stabbed to death in front of her two children, has been identified as Karen Gilliland. The 42-year-old tragically died at the scene, and her husband Nigel Gilliland, 45, is currently under police guard in hospital following the incident in Rockhampton on Tuesday evening.

Acting Inspector Luke Peachey told reporters on Wednesday, “It’s a horrific scene for all included, especially those children to see that happen to their mum.”

“We’ve been police officers for a number of years, and this is one of the worst things we’ve seen”, he added. “Three children have lost a mother, a father and mother have lost their daughter…so it’s an absolutely tragic event.”

Two of Gilliland’s children reportedly witnessed the attack, and neighbours said they saw them running from the home screaming as the alleged offender fled on foot. Police later found Nigel Gilliland nearby after a short search, and it is believed they were not living together at the home.

He was taken to hospital in a serious condition with self-inflicted injuries and is expected to have a second round of surgery on Wednesday, but is yet to be interviewed due to his condition.

While he has not yet been charged, police say charges are expected in the coming days.

“We believe this person will be able to provide us with some assistance with regards to this investigation,” Peachey said.

The woman’s three children are now with her father. “They’re very shaken up.”
