It took us on a five season-long rollercoaster ride, but action-crime series Queen Of The South has officially bowed out of the proceedings.
Yes, we too felt familiar feelings of disappointment and loss at the end of the whirlwind series, which follows the journey of Teresa Mendoza as she builds a vast drug empire.
The sad news came via The USA Network back in March, with a statement confirming Teresa’s time would end with the fifth season, which was released in April.
Unlike many other shows that’ve run their course and then some more (perhaps a little too much more, in some cases), Queen Of The South still had plenty of juice left in its figurative orange. Especially given its subsequent release on global streaming giant Netflix where it soared to the top of the ‘Trending’ list.
Why was Queen Of The South cancelled after season 5?
While it was never confirmed officially, season 4 of Queen Of The South saw a noticeable drop in ratings. That said, it remained the most-watched drama show belonging to the USA Network, per Newsweek.
Shortly before season 5’s release, executive producers Dailyn Rodriguez, Ben Lobato and David Friendly made a joint statement: “We could not be prouder of our entire cast and crew that joined us on this magnificent journey,” they shared.
“Queen of the South began shooting in Mexico City, brought us to faraway places like Malta and Colombia and finally landed in New Orleans. We cannot wait to share the explosive final season with our devoted fans. And, of course, we could not have made this show without the talented and tireless Alice Braga, who brought our queen to life.”
What is Queen Of The South About?
The popular series follows Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) from an impoverished background in Mexico. She falls in love with a member of a drug cartel, but when he’s murdered, she flees and begins her own drug ring in a revenge plot to take down those responsible for his death.
Is Queen Of The South based on a book?
Yes, the series is based off the novel La Reina Del Sur by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
The author’s work also inspired a second TV adaptation, which goes by the same name as the book and stars Kate del Castillo. It’s also on Netflix, FYI.
Will season 5 truly be the last we see of Queen Of The South?
Unfortunately it looks like the series has come to its natural end, although you can’t blame fans for asking after a sixth season when main character Teresa makes it out alive.
That said, the show remains under a firm ‘cancelled’ status. So if you, like us, are partial to a re-watch you can catch all five seasons on Netflix right here.
