Princess Diana captured the heart of millions around the world, including, it seems, no less than two very famous Hollywood men – at the exact same time.
In his long-awaited memoir, Me, Elton John talks a lot about his close friendship with the late Princess Diana – the singer is still extremely close with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry – and in one part, discusses her effect on men by recounting a dinner party he held with Diana and actors Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone.
In an excerpt from the upcoming book, he said that both actors were interested in Diana, however, from the offset she was getting along better with the Pretty Woman star. “Straight away, Richard Gere and Diana seemed very taken with each other,” John wrote, noting that the turn of events didn’t seem to sit well with Stallone and that he had a feeling the actor only came to dinner with the hopes of “picking Diana up” .
“Judging by the kind of looks he kept shooting them, Diana and Richard Gere’s newly blossoming friendship was not going down well with Sylvester Stallone at all,” he continued.
When dinner was served, John and his husband David Furnish noticed that both Gere and Stallone were missing from the table. When Furnish went to find them, he quickly returned to inform John that they had “a situation” on their hands. “It transpired that he’d discovered Sylvester Stallone and Richard Gere in the corridor, squaring up to each other, apparently about to settle their differences over Diana by having a fist-fight,” he wrote.
After dinner, Diana and Gere returned to their conversation and Stallone headed home — but not without first throwing a fit. “’I never would have come,’ he snapped, as David and I showed him to the door, ‘if I’d known Prince f—in’ Charming was gonna be here,’” John wrote. “Then he added: ‘If I’d wanted her, I would’ve taken her!’”
