A milestone birthday warrants a special gift—but it takes on a whole new meaning if you’re a royal. Indeed, nothing less than having Prince William’s face immortalised on a new £5 coin will suffice for his upcoming 40th birthday.
The Royal Mint has now unveiled the new coin featuring William’s profile, seen gazing upwards to the top right corner. There’s a number 40 on his let and a “W” on his right.
Fans have compared the profile used on the coin to a real life image taken of William in 2016.
The special edition coin was designed by engraver Thomas T. Docherty, who said he tried to strike a balance between William’s “fresh energy” and “being a young dad with the ceremonial nature of his Royal position”.
A father himself, Docherty said: “Even though our lives are a million miles apart, I understand how it feels to have just turned 40 and to have a young family of my own, so I wanted to ensure I captured His Royal Highness accurately at this stage in his life.”
Prince William turns 40 on June 21, just a few weeks after Buckingham Palace will host a series of major celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Between June 2 and June 5, the UK will spend the four day bank holiday weekend marking 70 years of service from Her Majesty (the longest in British history)—beacons will be lit, Trooping the Colour will see the royals reunited, plus, major concerts with iconic British stars await.
Yes, June will be a very big month for The Firm—so stay tuned, a royal watching spectacle awaits.
