On April 9, the royal family confirmed the passing of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Elizabeth’s husband of 74 years.
The announcement came via an official statement, which read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”
The statement added HRH passed away “peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
Philip is survived by his children, Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward, and their families, including his great-grandchildren, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis and Savannah and Isla Phillips, as well as Princess Eugenie’s son August, and Mia, Lena and Lucas Tindall, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie Harrison and their soon-to-arrive second child.
Upon hearing the news, many praised the Duke for his marriage to Her Majesty.
“He was the longest-serving consort in history, one of the last surviving people in this country to have served in the second world war at Cape Matapan, where he was mentioned in despatches for bravery,” said U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, adding, “He was an environmentalist, and a champion of the natural world long before it was fashionable.
