Three months after Playboy founder Hugh Hefner passed away, details of his will have been revealed.
Documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight reveal the 91-year-old multi-millionaire planned to distribute his $US43 million fortune between his wife, Crystal Harris, and his four children, daughter Christie and sons David, Marston and Cooper.
But, somewhat surprisingly for a man who made his name hosting notoriously debaucherous parties, he stipulated one major condition: if any of his beneficiaries abuse drugs or alcohol, they won’t receive the funds.
“If the trustees reasonably believe that… [the beneficiary] routinely or frequently uses or consumes any illegal substance so as to be physically or psychologically dependent upon that substance, or is clinically dependent upon the use or consumption of alcohol or any other legal drug or chemical substance that is not prescribed by a board-certified medical doctor or psychiatrist in a current program of treatment supervised by such doctor or psychiatrist,” the clause reads.
Whether he requested the clause in order to keep a particular member of the family in check is anyone’s guess.
Hefner had expressed concern about drug and alcohol abuse in the past; Vanity Fair reports that in a 1985 interview, he said he had stopped smoking and detested cocaine.
“I’ve seen cocaine as a very, very hurtful drug,” he said. “What I have to say about alcohol and tobacco is that it kills people… I smoked a pipe myself without inhaling until I had the stroke in March. And I don’t smoke now.”
