Oliver Curtis has been sentenced to two years in jail, with a minimum term of one year in the Supreme Court this morning.
Curtis was convicted for using insider trading with his former best friend, John Hartman, to build his ‘lifestyle of consipicuous extravagance’. He was taken to court when Hartman testified against him for the crimes he’d committed in his early 20s.
NSW Supreme Court Justice Lucy McCallum advised that based on the evidence in the case, she was convinced that ‘a sentence of imprisonment must be imposed’.
According to the Daily Mail, Justice McCallum described his lack of remorse for the crimes, saying that he was driven by ‘self-interested pursuit of material wealth’, and reminding everyone that ‘it is wrong to regard insider trading crime as victimless’.
The decision comes just days after his wife, Roxy Jacenko, who is the CEO of Sweaty Betty PR, wrote an impassioned letter pleading for his jail time to be reduced, or abandoned, because he is the primary care giver of their two children, Pixie and Hunter.
Curtis’ lawyer also tried to claim that Curtis had already been subjected to negative media attention and that this was punishment enough, however Justice McCallum did not take this into account, rebutting that unlike his wife (who has posted selfies of her outfits to court hearings), Curtis has not drawn much attention.
As Curtis was about to be taken away, he took Jacenko into a hug, and handed her his wedding ring, watch and the contents of his wallet. He gave her a final kiss before being taken away.
