Netflix’s The Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal was one of the most talked about true crime documentary series of the year. The doco-series didn’t only follow a dark and complex family murder case but landed on Netflix in the midst of its main subject’s real life murder trial. Only weeks after the series was released, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son, and sentenced to life in prison.

But, as the series revealed, the Murdaugh family had a lot more skeletons in the closet than one case could tackle—and since the series’ release, everything’s gotten a lot more complicated.

That’s why we’re excited to learn that a second season of the doco-series is coming to Netflix.

What Was The Murdaugh Murders Season One About?

Season one of The Murdaugh Murders explored the Murdaugh family dynasty in South Carolina, and the chain of events that lead to its downfall. The three-episode documentary series also explored the circumstances surrounding the suspicious deaths of five people—Paul Murdaugh (Alex’s youngest son), Maggie Murdaugh (Alex’s wife), Mallory Beach (a friend of Paul Murdaugh), Stephen Smith (a friend of Richard Murdaugh) and Gloria Satterfield (the family housekeeper), and the alleged financial crimes committed by the family.

What’s Happening With The Real Life Murdaugh Case Now?

Since the series’ release, Alex Murdaugh has been charged guilty to the murder of his wife and son. However, that’s not the end of the case. On August 25th 2023, the New York Post reported that Murdaugh would plead guilty to stealing millions from his disabled clients.

Not long after, Murdaugh’s surviving son, Buster broke his silence on the case and agreed with a FOX Nation host’s assessment of his father as a psychopath, stating, “I’m not prepared to sit here and say that it encompasses him as a whole, but I certainly think there are characteristics where you look at the manipulation and the lies and the carrying out of that such, and I think that’s a fair assessment.”

Buster, however, has stated that he doesn’t believe his father murdered his mother or brother, telling FOX, “I do not think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother.”

The most recent update in the case is that Murdaugh’s attorneys have demanded a new murder trial after accusing the clerk of jury tampering.

The season will also explore the impact of the Murdaugh family downfall on the local community, as the have been influential figures in the South Carolina community for more than 100 years.

While there’s a strong likelihood for more details to come to light, we’re not expecting any proper resolution until the trials have wrapped up. In February, executive producer Jenner Furst spoke to Variety about the mysteries that remain in the case.

“Remember, this trial is going to conclude, and there still won’t be any answers in Stephen Smith’s murder and there still won’t be any justice for Mallory Beach’s family. There is a lot still to uncover here. It’s fascinating and enthralling, and we think it all works together in a truly unique way, so we are super excited about the possibilities here.”

When Will Season Two Of The Murder Murdaughs Be Released?

If you can’t wait to watch the second season of The Murder Murdaughs then we have good news—season two is landing on Netflix later this month, on September 20th, 2023.
