The Most Popular Baby Names In NSW Have Been Revealed & There’s A Common Theme

Plus, a new girls name now reigns supreme.

If you know an Olivia or Oliver… you’re about to meet a whole lot more.

The two monikers have come out as the most popular names for newborns across New South Wales in a new report from the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages.

Following them up, Amelia, Charlotte and Isla came out second, third and fourth for girls, and Noah, Jack and William for boys.

Upon closer inspection of the list, it’s clear that simple two-syllable names like Ava, Mia, Chloe, Ella and Lily dominate the girls list (with many of them ending with an ‘A’). Similarly, Noah, Henry, Lucas and Leo also landed in the top 10 for boys.

Of course, it’s not hard to see why some of the names became so popular—Britain’s royals have long led the name game with traditional, yet on-trend monikers which quickly shoot to the top 100 baby name lists.

Last year, Zara and Mike Tindall welcomed a baby son named Lucas, the name of which came in at number seven on the boys list.

Meanwhile Princess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed a baby girl who they named Sienna. Sure enough, the girls name came in at number 11.

Interestingly, the stats also showed that nearly half (42 per cent) of all boys born in New South Wales have their names included in the top 100 list. Meanwhile girls names accounted for 38 per cent of the list.

Olivia moved up one place from 2020 after knocking Amelia from the top spot. Oliver has remained at the top of the list since 2014.

There was also a noticeable presence of literal flowery names for girl—we’re talking Lily, Rose, Violet, Daisy, Poppy and Jasmine. Meanwhile, shortened names for boys in their own right reigned supreme, think Jack, Charlie and Archie.

Below, check out the top 50 names for boys and girls in New South Wales, and see the full list here.
