Hollywood has been known for its lack diversity and television has traditionally only reflected heterosexual relationships with some exceptions, but it seems that finally, we are starting to see an increase in representation.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) release are “Where We Are on TV” report each year, and this year GLAAD reported that there are more queer characters being cast and on TV than ever before.
The report not only shows a record high of LGBTQ+ characters on television but for the first time in the history of GLAAD’s study, LGBTQ+ characters of colour actually outnumbered white ones.
The report focuses on all America’s broadcast networks and of the of the 857 series regular characters across all channels, 75 are LGBTQ.
Of course, only 8.8 per cent of characters being LGBT doesn’t actually reflect the real world, so whilst this is incredible progress, there is still a long way to go.
