People are calling for UK Independence Party leader Henry Bolton to step down after racist text messages his girlfriend, Jo Marney, sent about Meghan Markle emerged.
In the messages, published by Mail on Sunday, Marney says Markle, whose mother is African-American, would “taint” the British royal family.
The 25-year-old model and actress goes on to say that Markle marrying Prince Harry would pave the way for a “black king.”
Following the release of the racist messages, the Independence party immediately suspended Marney’s membership with many calling for her partner, Henry Bolton, to step down from his position as leader.
Marney has since released a statement to Mail on Sunday, saying her messages have been “taken out of context.”
“I apologise unreservedly for the shocking language I used. The opinions I expressed were deliberately exaggerated in order to make a point and have, to an extent, been taken out of context. Yet I fully recognise the offence they have caused.”
