While on their pre-engagement trip to Botswana, Africa, the couple happened to have dinner with directors Mark Linfield and Vanessa Berlowitz, who were beginning to work on the project at the time. Meghan was absolutely transfixed with how female elephants lead the herds and the message of empowerment, and it was at that moment that Linfield and Berlowitz decided they wanted her to narrate the documentary.
“She was absolutely intrigued by the elephants and transfixed, especially by the female empowerment side,” Berlowitz tells People. “How important the matriarchs are to the story; it really is all about female leadership. It’s a different form of power — it’s about consensual leadership. It’s also very inclusive, as well — very contemporary. She was absolutely fascinated by that.”
The directors revealed they immediately tested the duchesses voice from United Nations women’s speeches they found online against the footage they’d already gathered, and the two were a perfect match!
Last year, the couple shared the first glimpse into the incredible work they did on what we now know, was an extremely memorable trip for more reasons than one! The duke and duchess had travelled to Botswana to assist Dr. Mike Chase of Elephants Without Borders, the same organisation that Meghan donated her fee from the film too.
