“Can you please explain why same-sex marriage is not legal?”
This month, marie claire joins forces with 15 of Australia’s best-known names to fight for marriage equality. The unified message for the Government? The time is now!
Cover star Jessica Marais opens the 13-page portfolio with a question for the Australian Government: “Can you please explain to me why we are still talking about marriage equality in 2017?” The Love Child actor is genuinely perplexed that same-sex marriage is still not legal in this country.
Likewise, Asher Keddie is just as confused by Australia’s marriage laws. “I feel great embarrassment that our federal law recognises heterosexual marriage as a basic human right, yet regards same-sex partnerships as inferior,” admits the Offspring actor.
The Project co-host Waleed Aly says marriage equality is inevitable, so the question becomes: “Will this change happen harmoniously or with a whole lot of needless acrimony?” We’re hoping for the former.
The campaign also features model Jesinta Franklin, former AFL player Adam Goodes, model Gemma Ward, singer Thelma Plum, fashion designer Carla Zampatti, chefs Neil Perry, Matt Moran and Kylie Kwong, politicians Tanya Plibersek and Sarah Hanson-Young, and fashion designer Jayson Brunsdon with his partner Aaron Elias Brunsdon and son Roman.
In the rainbow-themed portfolio, each celebrity is wearing an “acceptance ring”, produced by global juggernaut Airbnb. The incomplete ring, which bears the inscription “Until We all belong”, symbolises the gap in marriage equality.
To join the campaign and pledge your support, go to untilweallbelong.com and order your free “acceptance ring” now.
The new issue of marie claire will be on sale on Thursday May 4.
