5 marie claire editors share the best advice their mother gave them

Because the best life lessons come from mum

“Live without boundaries” Alley Pascoe

entertainment and news editor

“When I was 16, my mum bought a camper van and we travelled around Australia for a year together. She taught me to live and think outside the box. The best advice mum ever gave me was that there are no boundaries to what I can achieve.

I also inherited mum’s inquisitive nature. She always encouraged me to ask questions. Now, I ask questions for a living as a journalist.”

“Don’t sweat the small stuff”

Monica Russell, fashion assistant

“My mum is constantly offering up words of wisdom and advice. One of the most important lessons she has passed on is her positive outlook on life. She has an amazing ability to find joy and happiness in even the smallest things.

On days when things aren’t going so great, I’ll often call her and she’ll tell me, “Don’t sweat the small stuff!” or “Fake it until you make it”. Her reassurances always cheer me up.”

“Always stand up for yourself”

Tara Morris, market editor

“My mum (aka Barbs) is hilarious – the life of any party. But she’s taught me some important life lessons. She’s always telling me, “Never let anyone walk all over you” and “Always stand up for yourself!

As the oldest – yet, shortest – of four sisters, and the type of person who avoids confrontation at any cost, it’s advice that’s come in handy more than once – and helped make me who I am today.”

“Trust your gut”

Ali Carey, editorial coordinator

“The best advice my mum has given me is trust yourself, trust your gut and do what makes you happy.

I can be a worrier, and the night before an exam or a job interview, mum has always been there on the end of the telephone, reassuring me and talking me off the ledge!

Thank you Mum for supporting me in every way, love you!”

“Make your own way in life”

Danielle Taylor, designer

“I spent my twenties travelling from city to city, and even lived overseas for a couple of years. Even though each move took me further from Mum, she was always the first to encourage me to make my own way.

She is an independent spirit, and one of the strongest and most positive women I know; the kind of person who achieves whatever she puts her mind to – whether that’s travelling to Europe in her 50s or becoming a volunteer in schools, helping children with reading. I’m so grateful she has instilled that sense of independence in me, and I hope I can be as positive as she is.”
