In a recent BBC TV interview, Mrs McCann spoke of their heartbreak at the milestone. “It’s a hard marker of time. It’s time we should have had with Madeleine. We should have been a family of five for all that time. It just feels stolen,” she said.

Kate and Gerry McCann have spoken out on the 10th anniversary of their daughter’s disappearance.

Looking back on the last decade, Mrs McCann added: “I never thought we’d still be in this situation, so far along the line. It’s a huge amount of time. In some ways it feels like it was only a few weeks ago, in other times it has felt really long.”

In 2007, Madeleine sparked the biggest missing persons’ hunt in history when she vanished from her family’s holiday unit in Portugal at the age of three.

Mrs McCann said her and her husband would do “whatever it takes for as long as it takes” to find their daughter, according to The Telegraph UK

The British couple shared their sadness at only being able to enjoy their “little perfect nuclear family of five” for such a short amount of time, referring to Madeleine and their now 12-year-old twins.

Mr McCann also spoke of the difficulty of realising that time is not frozen. “You adapt and you have a new normality. And unfortunately for us a new normality is a family of four,” he said.
