Lena Dunham has issued an apology for supporting a writer on her TV series Girls, who is facing sexual assault accusations.
Last week, it was reported that Los Angeles police were investigating actress Aurora Perrineaโs claims that she was raped by writer Murray Miller.
Dunham and Girls showrunner Jenni Konnecame to Millerโs defence, claiming the occurrence was โmisreportedโ.
โWe believe, having worked closely with him for more than half a decade, that this is the case with Murray Miller,โ the pair said in a statement, the BBC reports.
โWhile our first instinct is to listen to every womanโs story, our insider knowledge of Murrayโs situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year.โ
But Dunham has now backflippedโfollowing intense backlash onlineโand apologised for her statement.
โI naively believed it was important to share my perspective on my friendโs situation,โ the Girls creator tweeted on Sunday.
โI now understand that it was absolutely the wrong time to come forward with such a statement and I am so sorry.โ
Twitter user Leslie Lefkowitz reminded the public that Dunham has made a number of โtonedeaf apologiesโ in the past. Here are some examples:
