Even the briefest of glimpses at cult show Ozark, or viral Netflix series Inventing Anna will tell you that Julia Garner is a standout talent of her generation.

And now, the 28-year-old actor has been recognised for that very feat by being nominated for two Emmy Awards. Garner received nods in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category for her work in Ozark, while her infamous role as Anna Delvey in Inventing Anna scored her a nomination in the Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series, Movie or Anthology category.

“What can I say, but ‘wow, wow, wow’,” Garner penned on Instagram in the wake of the huge announcement.

Referencing the other six nominations Ozark received, Garner continued: “I’m giddy with excitement knowing the Ozark family will be reuniting one more time at the Emmy’s in September… To Jason Bateman, [Laura Linney], Chris Mundy and the entire cast and our incredible ATL crew, I LOVE YOU and THANK YOU for your unwavering support through the years.”

She added that her Inventing Anna nomination was a pleasant surprise: “I was filming Inventing Anna in between Ozark, going back and forth between the two. ‘Ruth’ and ‘Anna’ couldn’t be more polar opposite—it wasn’t easy to slip in and out of those characters. What was most rewarding about the process was the collective energy and creative force of everyone involved in bringing Inventing Anna to the screen.”

For our March cover storymarie claire spoke to Garner about how she stepped into the role of real life Soho grifter Anna Delvey, which involved nailing a particularly tricky accent.

She described a meeting she had with the real life Delvey, who was initially sceptical before hearing Garner imitate her accent to a tee.

“It was very intimidating, but when I just repeated what she was saying, she thought it was so funny,” Garner told us.

“I told Anna that it was my goal for people to see her as a person instead of a caricature. They don’t have to agree with what she did, but they should be open and willing to understand why she did it. People make mistakes and Anna is a person.”

There’s no denying Garner is having a golden year, last month she was cast to play Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the legendary singer. Garner scored the role over a highly competitive selection of actors including Sydney Sweeney and Florence Pugh.

Reese Witherspoon was also recognised in the Outstanding Actress category for her work in Morning Wars, while Kaley Cuoco and Elle Fanning received nods in the Outstanding Actress in A Comedy category for The Flight Attendant and The Great, respectively.
