Five agonising days of election waiting came to a head over the weekend, with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris taking home the win over incumbent Donald Trump.
But while the count was torturous, we all breathed a collective sigh of relief, on a day many have been hoping and praying for since 2016.
And while it’s admittedly troubling to see just how close the race was, it’s important to take a moment, reflect on what a monumental win this is and, of course, celebrate.
Because, after all that this year has thrown at us, this is a victory that belongs to the people that made it happen—who often had the most to lose. Through sheer will and determination to work towards a better, less divided world, they’ve proved that it’s never too late for change.
Week-long champagne celebrations will definitely be on the cards, but we can’t help but shed some happy tears when we witness the elated response of the U.S. citizens who said ‘no’ to a racist bigot in power and a big, fat ‘YES’ to a leader who will actively fight for equality, climate change action, gun control, and democracy.
