Veteran actress Jessica Walter, famed for her role as the iconic Lucille Bluth on Arrested Development and tritagonist Malory on Archer, has passed away. Her family confirmed that she died in her sleep on March 24, aged 80.
Walter’s daughter Brooke Bowman remembered her mother in a statement as “a working actor for over six decades,” whose “greatest pleasure was bringing joy to others through her storytelling both on-screen and off. While her legacy will live on through her body of work, she will also be remembered by many for her wit, class, and overall joie de vivre.”
As well as her incredible comedic timing and ability to completely inhabit the heavy-drinking, snarky character of Lucille Bluth, Walters will be remembered and immortalised digitally. Winking gifs, reaction pictures and memes featuring her iconic lines are spread across the internet—a legacy that far more people are probably aware of than her Golden Globe and Emmy awards.

Following the news, peers and fans of Walters have taken to social media to both celebrate her life and mourn her loss. Walter’s Arrested Development co-star Jason Bateman, who played her son Michael Bluth, wrote, “What an incredible career, filled with amazing performances. I will forever remember my time with her, watching her bring Lucille Bluth to life. She was one of a kind.”

R. I. P. Jessica Walter. What an incredible career, filled with amazing performances. I will forever remember my time with her, watching her bring Lucille Bluth to life. She was one of a kind. All my love and thoughts to her family.

Meanwhile her Archer co-star Amber Nash recalled her inimitable wit. “I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with and know Jessica. She was the best of us,” Nash wrote on Instagram. “She would wait for a moment and then blow us all out of the water with the funniest thing you’ve ever heard. I learned so much from Jessica. A classy gal indeed.”
Below, some of the tributes from fans and friends of the late Jessica Walters.
Jessica Walter was a deeply talented person

We first met on a pilot in ‘96 and I was instantly blown away
I’m fortunate to have had a front row seat to her brilliance for 25 years
My thoughts are with her daughter Brooke and grandson Micah today
Farewell Jessica, you’ll be missed
I was on the AD set once and I saw Jessica Walter looking at me. She fixed me with that Lucille Bluth stare and came towards me. I was frozen in my spot, afraid she was about to verbally eviscerate me. She walked up and said: "I absolutely love your dress. Does it have pockets?" https://t.co/6zPRkYwGDG

Jessica Walter on Arrested Development was an example of that sitcom thing where the character was perfectly realized from episode one but you could tell the writers were so pleased with the performance that they just gave her better and better material

Just learned that Jessica Walter was also Fran Sinclair on Dinosaurs. Absolute legend https://t.co/x0vf8K5HUd

A less-known bit of Jessica Walter's career: In 1974 she became, on Amy Prentiss, the 1st woman to join the Columbo-McCloud-McMillan & Wife mystery wheel as a sole female lead. It lasted 3 eps at a time when female network drama leads barely existed. She still won an Emmy for it.

Rest in peace, Jessica Walter, the multifaceted star of PLAY MISTY FOR ME, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, ARCHER, DINOSAURS, the original DOCTOR STRANGE movie, and the sadly forgotten but classic slasher HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

You had an incredible career and you will be missed. pic.twitter.com/8g1Qwgp6h9
RIP Jessica Walter. I don't know if any actor ever conveyed more with a wink. Her Lucille Bluth was the best satire of the smug rich ever done. Her voice all transatlantic arrogance, vodka delusion, and charming ignorance. The Motherboy episode alone, my god. A true comic genius. pic.twitter.com/nwMPzfbD6i

Jessica Walter was truly an icon and the MVP of Arrested Development. Lucille Bluth’s eternal shade is legendary. 😭

RIP Jessica Walter an actress’s actress. A legend. An icon. pic.twitter.com/LS9E5HVbNM
Also I cannot BELIEVE she was 80. I know aging well is an expensive full-time hobby and not really a reflection on you but wow she was doing it.
