Lopez was famously nominated for Best Supporting Actress at this year’s ceremony alongside fellow contenders: Laura Dern (Marriage Story), Florence Pugh (Little Women), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Margot Robbie (Bombshell) and Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell) – with Dern taking home the coveted gong in the end.
It was a surprising turn of events for Lopez, who played the lead role of Ramona Vega in hit 2019 film Hustlers, as there had been mass media attention shrouding the silver screen star’s nomination.
“I was a little sad because there was a lot of build-up to it. There were so many articles,” she admitted during an appearance at Winfrey’s ‘2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour’.
“I got so many good notices – more than ever in my career – and there was a lot of ‘She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar. It’s going to happen; if she doesn’t, you’re crazy,'” she continued. “I’m reading all the articles going, ‘Oh my god, could this happen?’ And then it didn’t and I was like, ‘Ouch.’ It was a little bit of a letdown.”
Lopez later opened up about how the result made her feel as though she had disappointed family and friends.
“Most of my team has been with me for years – 20, 25 years – and I think they had a lot of hopes on that and they wanted it, too. So I felt like I let everyone down a little bit.”
Her role in Hustlers earned multiple nominations from prestigious awards ceremonies including the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
But the mother-of-two isn’t going to let the Academy Awards snub prevent her from chasing future dreams.
“You realise you want people’s validation. You want people to say you did a good job, and I realised, ‘No, you don’t need that. You do this because you love it,” Lopez stated. “I don’t need this award to tell me I’m enough.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
