On the promo trail for his new album, 4:44, Jay-Z has revealed his history with troubled singer Amy Winehouse.
Speaking on Tidal’s Rap Radar podcast, the rapper reflected on the first time he met Winehouse at The Spotted Pig in New York.
Winehouse, who died from alcohol poisoning in her London home in 2011, battled drug and alcohol addiction throughout her career.
“I looked at her and I was like, ‘stay with us’” Jay-Z says. “The first time we hung out, I told her, ‘stay with us.’”
Jay-Z goes onto describe how Winehouse was stuttering at the time, US Weekly reports. “I was like, ‘you don’t even stutter. Why are you doing that?’” he says.
“She was telling us, she was writing the songs to our face,” he continues. “They’re trying to make me go to rehab, I’m nto going. Like, what? You have to go!”
Jay-Z collaborated with Winehouse on a remix of ‘Rehab’. She was 27 when she died.
