While talking about his new role in the Broadway play Sea Wall / A Life, the 38-year-old actor said that he โ€œhopes to become a father one day.โ€

Speaking with host Willie Geist on Sunday TODAYGyllenhaal said, โ€œItโ€™s a show about faith and family and the mess and comedy of life, you know? Itโ€™s really actually about two fathers and about, for my character, someone whoโ€™s just about to become a father. He goes back into his relationship with his own father and the passing of his father and how that makes him feel becoming a father.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve learned โ€” you know, I am not a father,โ€ he continued. โ€œI do hope to be a father one day.โ€

Gyllenhaal, who is godfather to Michelle Williamsโ€˜ 13-year-old daughter with the late Heath Ledger, Matilda Rose, also spoke of having children to PEOPLE in 2017. โ€œI want to continue becoming more of an adult than I already am,โ€ he said at the time. โ€œHopefully with a family of my own.โ€

In the same interview, the actor, who starred on Brokeback Mountain alongside Heath Ledger, said he loved that Ledger would shut down homophobic comments or jokes about the 2005 film. โ€œI see people who have joked with me or criticised me about lines I say in that movie โ€” and thatโ€™s the thing I loved about Heath. He would never joke,โ€ Gyllenhaal shared.

โ€œSomeone wanted to make a joke about the story or whatever he was like, โ€˜No. This about love.โ€™ Like, thatโ€™s it, man. Like, no,โ€ he added.
