Our mother was an incredible woman—a force in business, a world-class athlete, a radiant beauty and caring mother and friend. Ivana Trump was a survivor.
“She fled from communism and embraced this country. She taught her children about grit and toughness, compassion and determination. She will be dearly missed by her mother, her three children and ten grandchildren.”
Ivana was born Ivana Zelnickova in the Czechoslovak city of Gottwaldov, which was taken over by communists the year before she was born in 1948.
According to the New York Times she was introduced to Donald Trump at a “party in Montreal” in the late 1970s. They were married after dating for only nine months in 1977.
After having three children together, their marriage ended after 15 years following media speculation that Donald was having an affair with actor and model, Marla Maples, whom he later married.
Ivana said she had been on good terms with her ex-husband in recent years, telling the New York Post that she “suggests” a few things to him every now and then.
“We speak before and after the appearances and he asks me what I thought,” she explained, adding that she had urged him to “be more calm”.
“But Donald cannot be calm. He’s very outspoken. He just says it as it is.”
