Hilary Duff gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Banks, to her fiancee Matthew Koma eight months ago and already the Younger star has had her fair share of unsolicited parenting advice courtesy of the internet.
The 31-year-old, who shares another son – seven-year-old Luca Cruz – with her ex-husband Mike Comrie, has come under fire today for piercing her daughter’s ears.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Duff shared a photo of Banks sitting on the floor with a tie-dye top on and her blonde hair tied up into a ponytail. “She has enough hair for a pony!” the proud mum wrote, before adding, “Oh and yes we pierced her ears.”
Naturally, the internet being the internet, it didn’t take long before people started criticising the parents. “I can’t fathom why you would you think it’s okay to have your daughters ears pierced. Causing her a tremendous amount of pain and discomfort,” one Instagram user commented.

Duff then shared a sweet black and white photo showing her holding Banks in the kitchen – pierced ears and all. The comments started flooding in with many saying it’s “unnecessary” to cause a child pain for a trivial beauty procedure and some going as far as to call it abuse.
But the comments weren’t all bad. A lot of women jumped to Duff’s defence, saying that it’s her choice and – quite rightfully – that there are a lot worse things going on in the world. “I don’t know why people feel the need to mum shame? This is a beautiful photos! Hilary isn’t likely to take her daughters earnings out just because a bunch of strangers tell her how horrible of a mum she is for doing it in the first place… there are far worse things parents do to their children,” one person wrote.
“This is the most unproblematic Disney character we have… y’all goin leave Lizzie McGuire alone 😒” another said.
