Helena Bonham Carter Offers Some Advice For Meghan Markle On Dealing With Haters

“It must be really hard for her”

Helena Bonham Carter and Meghan Markle have more in common than you might think. They’re both actors and while Meghan is an actual member of the royal family, Helena is currently playing one in her new role as Princess Margaret in The Crown.

While on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Helena was asked if she had any words of wisdom for Meghan Markle.

During a Q&A session, a caller asked Helena: “Now that you’re playing a member of the royal family, what do you think of all the negative press and treatment that Meghan Markle has been recently getting?”

“I don’t pay attention to it, and I wish she wouldn’t have to,” Helena said. “I feel like there’s just so much. It’s just all too much. It must be really hard for her not to, but all I’d say to her is, as soon as you become well known and in the public, it’s a domain you have to kind of accept.”

Helena is English and is all too familiar dealing with the British press. She likened the situation to her on-screen character, Princess Margaret:

“That’s the same thing with Margaret. It’s really interesting playing her. So many people keep giving me an opinion about every single person in the royal [family]. You’re like, ‘You didn’t meet them!’ Everyone feels that they’re an authority. And of course, unless you’ve met the person, don’t even voice an opinion.”

“The most important or useful thing that someone told me is [don’t be] putting your self esteem in the hands of strangers,” was Helena’s number one piece of advice for Meghan.
