As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, individual stories about how the changes to everyday life – from school and business closures to social distancing – are effecting families are starting to appear online. Experts and government officials have continued to warn about hoarding food and supplies, but many stores and shelves are being emptied daily by people planning to be stuck at home for the foreseeable future.

However, when people overbuy and stock their homes with products they don’t need (say like 200 rolls of toilet paper), others have to go without.

That’s what happened to Lauren Whitney, an American mother whose TikTok video about trying to buy nappies for her child went viral. After visiting several stories, Whitney recorded a video of herself in tears when she couldn’t find the nappies she needed.

“To all you crazy people buying out all the diapers, how am I supposed to diaper my child if I can’t afford 20 at a time like you can?” she said.

The video is seriously heartbreaking and is just a short reel of the realities people across the world are facing during this uncertain time.

Many took to social media to offer support.

While Whitney is based in the US, the same issues are happening in Australia. Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged the public to stop hoarding and called the behaviour “the most un-Australian” he had seen.

“Stop hoarding,” he said. “I can’t be more blunt about it. Stop it. It is not sensible, it is not helpful and it has been one of the most disappointing things I have seen in Australian behaviour in response to this crisis.

“That is not who we are as a people. It is not necessary. It is not something that people should be doing.”

As the world adjusts to our “new normal”, it’s important to remember how individual actions might have a ripple effect on the wider community. We’re all in this together – so be kind, be safe.
