A Perth grandmother has agreed to help her daughter have another baby, taking on the role of surrogate for her future grandchild.
Sherrie Zammit, 49, is helping daughter Chloe, 31, have a second child after a rare cancer diagnosis resulted in her needing a hysterectomy 10 years ago, Yahoo7 reports.
โMy days, I thought, were done and dusted with pregnancies, and never did I expect to be carrying my grandchild, but Iโm really excited,โ Sherrie told 7 News.
Chloe, mother of son Isaac, longed to have a baby with her fiancรฉ, Dimitri Pixomatis, and was thrilled when her mother received the medical all-clear to proceed.
โWeโre using Chloeโs eggs, my sperm โ and my mother in law is just the oven,โ Pixomatis said.
However, the family has now hit a major road-block. Prohibitive legal costs have put a halt to their surrogacy plans, forcing them to start a crowdfunding campaign in an attempt to raise the funds.
โMy mother is 49 and we donโt have much time,โ Chloe writes on their GoFundMe page. โWe are reaching out to the community to help us realise our dream of completing our family. Iโm terrified that the process of changing these laws will be too slow and by the time they do change, it would be too late for us.โ
So far, the campaign has raised $2295 towards their $40,000 goal.
