If you joined the record-breaking 17.4 million strong global audience tuning in to watch yesterday’s Game of Thrones premiere then you’re well versed in the significance of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) epic love story.
Obvious incest notwithstanding, Daenerys and Jon are destined to be together. Daenerys is technically Jon’s aunt (a fact revealed to Snow in the Stark’s crypt by Sam) however in light of Jamie and Cersei Lannister’s relationship this union seems – dare we say it – totally fine and healthy.
Jon and Khaleesi’s relationship is been largely foreshadowed from day dot so we know their scenes are littered with major plot clues. And now fans have noticed there’s a deeper, darker meaning behind last night’s big dragon riding and kissing scene.
Here’s how the aunt-nephew-dragon romance played out: Daenerys lets Jon ride a dragon for the first time (she rides Drogon and he rides Rhaegal, the dragon named after his father), and the two fly away to a waterfall.
Then she says to Snow: “We could stay a thousand years… no one would find us” Before they lock lips with Drogon watching on… awkwardly.
Do you know when we have seen this pretty much exact set up before?
*Drumroll* Jon Snow and Ygritte.
Back in season three, Jon lost his virginity to Ygritte with another rock formation as the backdrop. While the lovers were hauled away in a cave. Ygritte says: “Let’s not go back. I don’t ever want to leave this cave, Jon Snow.”
Not long afterward Ygritte was tragically shot – as she lay with an arrow through her chest – she whispered to Jon, “You remember that cave? We should have stayed in that cave.”
Pretty darn heartbreaking don’t you think? Fans agree to take to Twitter to share their emotional reactions to the popular theory.
