Mr Alhajali, 23, escaped with his brother Omar from Daraa in southern Syria three years ago and was granted asylum in Britain.

The young man was studying civil engineering and hoped he could one day return to his home country to help rebuild it, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Mr Alhajali lived on the 14th storey of the London tower block and was reportedly trapped for hours while firefighters tried to rescue residents on lower floors.

The Telegraph reports Mr Haj Ali had called his loved ones in Syria while he was trapped in the burning building.

He sent the final heartbreaking message: “The fire is here now, goodbye”.

Friend and co-founder of the Syria Solidarity Campaign, Abdulaziz al-Mashi, told the Press Association that Mr Alhajali “was kind, charitable and full of passion for his family. I can’t believe he’s not here.

The Syria Solidarity Campaign, an organisation that promotes peace and democracy in Syria, released a statement about Mr Haj’s tragic death.

“Mohammad undertook a dangerous journey to flee war and death in Syria, only to meet it here in the UK in his own home,” the statement read.

“Mohammad came to this country for safety and the UK failed to protect him.

“We absolutely agree that a thorough investigation into building regulations should take place immediately.”
