This Year’s Emmy Nominations Included A Historic Number Of Black Nominees

It's about time 👏

After years of being called out for not giving credit to the incredible work of so many Black actresses and actors, the entertainment industry is finally beginning to make strides in recognising a diverse range of talent. The 2020 Emmy Nominations have been released, and for the first time, the list features a record number of Black talent.

Variety reported that 34.3 percent of the acting nominees are Black, with a total of 102 acting nominees across the various categories.

Zendaya received her first-ever nomination for her groundbreaking role as Rue Bennett in Euphoria, appearing in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. In the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series Or Movie, Regina King was nominated for Watchmen and Octavia Spencer received a nomination for Self Made.

Fans particularly praised Kerry Washington, who broke an Emmy record with four nominations across four different categories. 

Tracee Ellis Ross also received a nomination for black-ish in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series alongside Insecure’s Issa Rae. And Rae’s co-star Yvonne Orji was nominated for outstanding supporting actress. Maya Rudolph was also nominated twice in the Oustanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, alongside Wanda Sykes and Angela Bassett.

In the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category, both Samira Wiley and Thandie Newton were nominated.

This year’s historical list of nominees proves Hollywood is on its way to giving accolade to the many who have deserved it for years. The ceremony will take place on September 20.
