With a room full of A-listers done up to the nines, it would be a hard task for anyone to take away the spotlight, but that’s exactly what Director Glenn Weiss did when he took to the stage at today’s Emmy Awards.
Accepting the award for Directing a Variety Special for his work on the Oscars, Weiss started his speech with a beautiful tribute to his mum who had passed away just two weeks earlier.
“I’m really grateful to be here but it’s bittersweet,” he began. “The person most proud at this moment would be my mum, and she passed away just two weeks ago. A part of my heart is broken, I don’t think it will ever be repaired. But she’s in me and she always will be.”
This would have been enough to tug at the heartstrings, but he wasn’t done there.

“Mum always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jane. Jane, you are the sunshine in my life. And Mum was right: don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”
Jane then came up on to the stage and the director dropped to one knee and gave her his late mother’s ring.
And the crowd (and Twitter) erupted – but no one moreso than Leslie Jones.
