According to The Sydney Morning Herald, talks between the government and Kensington Palace have been underway for weeks with an official invitation from Prime Minister Scott Morrison expected in the next few days.

During the trip, the royal couple will visit New South Wales and Victoria – with the possibility of South Australia on the agenda – to spur more international financial support for victims and volunteer firefighters.

Back in January, the couple, alongside the Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, expressed their condolences on Instagram.

The personal message read, “We continue to be shocked and deeply saddened to hear about the fires that are destroying homes, livelihoods and wildlife across much of Australia.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people and communities who are affected by this devastating event,” the caption continued.

We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives, and the brave firefighters who continue to risk their own lives to save the lives of others.”

If plans go ahead, the trip will mark Prince William’s fifth visit to Australia (the royal famously visited Queensland and Victoria in 2011) and the duo’s second.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last visited in April 2014 alongside a nine-month-old Prince George during their three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand – a trip which marked their son’s first royal tour.

It is not yet known whether or not their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, will join Kate and William on the upcoming trip.

Kensington Palace has yet to comment on reports.
