Dakota Johnson has shared her phone number with the world, asking women and girls to contact her and tell her their personal stories of assault and sexual violence. After The Fifty Shades of Grey actress took to the Global Citizen Festival stage in New York, the star shared her number with her 2.7-million Instagram followers yesterday, again calling for people to share their stories, captioning that there was “power in numbers”.
The post remains Johnson’s single Instagram post.
Addressing crowds at The Global Citizens Festival, Johnson told the crowd that instead of talking, she wanted to listen.
“I don’t want to speak, I’d rather listen,” she said to the crowd.
“I care what you have to say, and I want to help you, women and girls around the world, to tell your story.
“This is my phone number (212-653-8806),” she added.
“And I want you to call me, and I want you to tell me your story in a voicemail or I want you to send me a message at [email protected] and I want you to tell me what you’ve gone through as a woman or a girl who’s been suffering.”
Johnson continued, “If we don’t speak the same language, that’s ok. We have a team for that. We’ll translate it. And if you’re going to threaten to hurt me, we have a team for that too.”
The actress said she, with the help of Global Citizen would compile victims’ accounts of assault and violence and have their voices heard.
Combatting sexual assault and gender equality were themes at the 2018 Global Citizens Festival, with Eonline reporting that Janelle Monae spoke about Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who testified about an alleged assault by newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
“I dedicate this to Dr. Ford, I dedicate this to Anita Hill, I dedicate this to anyone who is trying to make this place a better world,” E Online reported Monae said onstage.
Global Citizen Festival included performances by top musicians Shawn Mendes, Janet Jackson and Cardi B, with Bella Hadid’s recently Instagram official boyfriend The Weekend closing the show.
