With the brand new season comes a shiny new cast with Oscar-winner Olivia Colman stepping into Claire Foy’s block heels and Tobias Menzes stealing Matt Smith’s crown in the role of Prince Philip, as Buckingham Palace rides the turbulent ’60s and ’70s.
But it’s the introduction of the future Duchess of Cornwall which is sure to steer the desk-side chatter at work this afternoon.
Although admittedly a rather quick tease, actress Emerald Fennell of ‘Killing Eve’ fame, transforms into Camilla Parker Bowles (née Shand). In the footage, she is seen lounging in the bath tub twirling a cigarette in her fingers by candle light. Meanwhile, Prince Charles, played by Jack O’Connor, is given advice by a mysterious character: “Never turn your back on true love”.

Charles’ tumultuous love life will certainly steal the spotlight this season, as he reappears as a 20-something Cambridge University student struggling to understand his newfound royal responsibilities. In one standout scene, he is told to “watch out” for his family’s true intentions. The Windsor power struggle hints at his eventual engagement to Princess Diana in 1981 – already a reason to tune into season four with actress Emma Corrin preparing to take on the role.
Further playing on our intrigue, the trailer hints at Princess Anne’s involvement in what becomes a controverisal love triangle as she embarks upon an affair with British Army Officer Andrew Parker-Bowles who was dating Camilla at the time. Anybody else already struggling to keep up with the royal drama?
Life is equally as complicated for the rest of The Firm too, as the country “falls apart” in the words of Colman.
Ahead of her 1977 Silver Jubilee, the Queen fears losing popularity as footage of the miners’ strikes and famous aftermath of the Aberfan disaster of 1966 unfolds on screen. Throw in the appointment of Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson and you can already feel the bubbles of frustration froth from Buckingham Palace.
But in a bid to show resilience, Her Majesty reminds the Windsor clan that although they have all made sacrifices for the crown, “it is not a choice, it is a duty.”
Has anybody else already cleared their diaries ahead of next month?
